Get out of the
fast lane and discover slower pace of life reminiscent of days gone by!
An era of roadside diners, pinball machines and some of the finest
automobiles out of Detroit.
During the course of its history, this 2400 mile highway opened new lifelines in a once impoverished southwest. In 1927, the National Highway System was established and 10 years later the "Main Street of America" was paved all the way from Chicago to Santa Monica. During the "Dust Bowl Years" (1934-1936), a massive flight of Midwesterners used route 66 as the road to prosperity in California. Once again, during World War II (1942 to 1945) the Mother Road became an artery for the nations war-industry, as large amounts of westbound traffic headed for California. Automobile production ceased and gasoline rationing began. Public use of the highway gave way to heavy wartime traffic which caused the road to crumble. Couple with the lack of maintenance, the deteriorated surface remained un-repaired until postwar America. New found prosperity after WW2, gave Americans the opportunity to travel and take overland vacations. The Mother Road was once again in its glory. From the mid-forties until 1957, Route 66 hosted millions of vacationers and travelers to and from the Pacific coast. In 1957, the National Interstate Highway system was instituted by President Eisenhower. From this date until the systems completion in 1982, the feverish construction of Interstate highways continued. In 1981, Route 66 was officially decommissioned and the few remaining highway signs were brought down.
