Mexico's Emerald Coast
18 days - 1600 miles
Scheduled Date:
December 5
Snow capped volcanoes, swampy lowlands, verdant green highlands and tropical rain
forest all combine to make up one of Méxicos most beautiful states -
Veracruz. A
long narrow strip of land, Veracruz stretches over 400 miles along the Gulf of México.
The land varies from beaches to Méxicos highest peak - Citlaltepetl. Within the
states boundaries are important archaeological sites of the Huastec, Totonac and Olmec
cultures. the states historical significance is further underscored by
Hernan
Cortés landfall near the present day city of Veracruz in 1519. It was from here
that he began his conquest of México and the rest of New Spain.
The Gulf Coast of México has long been a resort getaway for Mexican Nationals.
Many small and interesting towns dot the beaches between Tampico and Veracruz,
virtually
untouched by foreign tourists. This area is called the "Costa Esmeralda"
(Emerald Coast).
Our journey begins at McAllen, Texas where we set off across the plains of the
state of Tamaulipas. We get our first glance of the Gulf of México when we arrive in
Tampico. From this point on, we will be in lush, tropical country. Our group will travel
through one of the main citrus growing regions of México in the Naranjos region of the
state of Veracruz.
El Tajin Ruins
The incredible Totonaca ruins at
El Tajin are one of Méxicos most interesting and
unusual. Covering over 2300 acres, this is the largest religious ceremonial center in
northern México. It was inhabited during the 4th and 5th centuries AD.
Veracruz
The colonial city of Veracruz dates back to the
1519 when Hernan de Cortés made his first
landing on Mexican soil. It was from here that Cortés explored inland and discovered the
Aztec capital and launched his campaign of colonization in continental America. Today it
is Méxicos largest and oldest port.
During our stay you will have the opportunity to visit the
Spanish fort of Ulúa,
the Naval museum and lighthouse, and cruise the harbor on a boat. The Zócalo
(town
square) at night is full of Mariachis, music, and fun. Breakfast at the famous
La Parroquia cafe, founded over 100 years ago.
Villahermosa
The famous stone-carved heads of La Venta are located in the vibrant city of Villahermosa.
Found during a petroleum exploration in the region, each head weighs from two to three
tons.
Palenque
The Mayan temples of Palénque are the most mystical you can visit on this tour.
Surrounded by jungle covered hills, the site emits an air of mysterious
tranquility and
majestic eminence. Be prepared to do some climbing in the jungle to see some of the
un-excavated temples and wildlife. The site retains its aura of a lost city that has just
been discovered. The impressive Temple of the Inscriptions contains a crypt that housed
the remains of the great ruler, Pakal. Just one-hour away, Agua Azul National Park, awaits
you.
